Today the Aircraft station that is nearby, named from the Williams RAAF base, opened in 1921, seven years after a base was established at Point Cook.

There is a police station located right near the railway station.
Shopping in Laverton is very limited. The shopping strip north of Laverton Station now has few operating businesses and is almost deserted after a long period of decline. Basic needs are catered for at Aviation Road (near Aircraft Station), which contains basic services such as a supermarket, fast food, clothing and real estate. Otherwise most people go out of the suburb to shop, particularly to the Central Square Shopping Centre at neighbouring Altona Meadows.
In 1997 Port Phillip Prison, the main maximum security prison in Victoria, was opened in neighbouring Truganinia.
